Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is increasingly recognized as a powerful approach to enhancing emotional and somatic well-being. When integrated with somatic modalities like Gestalt therapy, the results can be transformative, offering individuals unique opportunities for healing and self-discovery.
What is Animal-Assisted Therapy?
Animal-assisted therapy involves the purposeful inclusion of animals in therapeutic settings to promote physical, emotional, and psychological health. Research shows that interactions with animals can reduce stress, improve mood, and foster emotional regulation. These benefits align seamlessly with Gestalt therapy, which emphasizes the holistic connection between body, mind, and environment.
How Animals Enhance Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt therapy focuses on present-moment awareness, encouraging individuals to explore their emotions, physical sensations, and environment.
Animals, particularly in equine-assisted settings, provide immediate, non-judgmental feedback, helping participants stay grounded in the here and now. Their natural sensitivity to human emotions can illuminate underlying issues, offering a mirror to the client’s internal state.
Studies have highlighted the profound impact of animal-assisted interventions, such as:
Enhancing Mindfulness: Research indicates that incorporating animals into mindfulness-based psychotherapy can reduce depressive symptoms and improve overall mindfulness skills. Animals naturally draw us into the present moment, a cornerstone of Gestalt practice.
Reducing Stress and Anxiety: Systematic reviews show that interacting with animals can lower cortisol levels, decrease anxiety, and promote a sense of calm. These outcomes complement the somatic focus of Gestalt therapy, where clients learn to identify and release tension held in the body.
Building Confidence and Trust: Equine-assisted therapy, for instance, has been shown to help individuals develop motor skills and regain confidence after neurological trauma. These experiences often translate into enhanced self-efficacy and interpersonal trust.
Why Combine Gestalt Therapy with AAT?
Both Gestalt therapy and AAT are grounded in the belief that healing occurs through connection—whether to oneself, others, or the natural world. By integrating animals into Gestalt practices, therapists can create an enriched environment where clients feel supported, attuned, and empowered to explore their personal growth.
At Wisdom of the Brumby, we embrace the synergy between Gestalt therapy and animal-assisted interventions. Through our equine-assisted learning programs, participants experience the healing power of nature and the profound lessons offered by our animal partners. Whether walking alongside a horse or observing their gentle presence, clients often discover new insights into themselves and their relationships.
A Personal Journey with Equine-Assisted Therapy
My own experience with somatic therapy through equine-assisted psychotherapy has been both profound and life-changing. During my recovery from burnout, I first encountered a miniature horse whose delicate and nervous demeanor deeply resonated with me. As I observed her fine bones and kind yet frightened nature, I realized that everything I noticed about her was a reflection of myself. This little horse evoked a wave of emotions within me, engulfing me in sadness as I caught a glimpse of my own reality.
In that moment, as tears flowed, the message became clear: "You need to be cared for." It was a pivotal point in my life—at 40 years old, I finally allowed myself to feel into my exhaustion and acknowledged the need to make radical changes to begin my healing journey.
Even now, as a certified and qualified practitioner four years later, I continue to engage in equine-assisted sessions for my professional and personal development. Gestalt therapy has been the first conventional therapeutic approach to provide me with the tools to delve deep within, understand who I am, and heal from life’s traumas. This journey is ongoing, as life’s challenges often resurface old wounds, but I am truly grateful for the brumbies and the serene space I work in. It has become a way of life, one rooted in connection, healing, and growth.
Animal-assisted therapy isn’t just a method; it’s a bridge to deeper connection, authenticity, and healing.
